In Performance Making

The performance course is organized by two teaching and performance artists: Raphaël Beau and Dash Che. The facilitators alternate teaching days of the course. The course focuses on two main components: getting familiar with artistic methods by looking at various performance art works and trying artistic methods through different performance practices.
In our six-week course we will engage with all things performance through theory and practice. For the theory part we will read a few texts, watch and discuss many existing artistic works and think together. We will work collectively and individually, develop performative routines, understand, discuss and test multiple performance methods or the principles and ways that guide your performance making. Moreover, we will develop strategies of giving and receiving critical (and loving) feedback on personal artistic work. The practical aspect of the course will involve working with scores, engaging in somatic and movement exercises, exploring touch and the textures of our surroundings, and experimenting with text-making. We’ll practice improvisation and instant composition as tools for performance, journal our experiences, work outdoors and in public spaces, and learn to embrace experimentation and failure as part of the process. Reflection—both individual and collective—will be central, as will rotating roles between performer, observer, and facilitator. Together, we’ll consider the resonance of our work within current local and global contexts, and engage with questions of authorship, collaboration, heritage, and the future of performance-making.
Participants are asked to have interest in performance, site-specific performance, improvisation, working in groups and alone, a curiosity and taste for taking risk and trying new things: being seen, exploring different ways of performing, playing-performing outdoor and specifically in public space.
RESPONSIBLE TEACHERS/FACILITATORS
Dash Che (they/them)
is a trans masc post-Soviet immigrant performance artist and a performance educator based in Helsinki. They practice as a solo artist as well as in a performance duet called Mean Time Between Failures. In their teaching they work across disciplines bringing together social sciences, somatics, dance, critical and queer theories, clowning, activist and community practices. In their performance they explore personal histories, contradicting aesthetics, heavy political topics, and conflicting concepts through materiality of the body, objects and humor. Dash has BA from UC Berkeley in Interdisciplinary Studies and Performance Studies and MA from Uniarts of Helsinki in Live Art and Performance Studies. Additionally Dash completed a 6-month dance intensive at Outokumpu dance school.
Raphaël Beau (they/them)
is a white able-bodied performance artist and a live drawing model, born in France, based in Helsinki. They have spent the last five years developing two practices: a performance practice called here for a moment and a practice of facilitating collective thinking through movement called play and act from what is here. They strive to create contexts for learning in which participants take turns in sharing their knowledge and experiences. They have experience in gliding and hold a glider pilot's license, a MA degree in energy and environmental engineering from INSA Lyon, a 10 years experience and BA in community work in the south of France and a MA degree in Dance Performance from Uniarts. They currently spend most of their time in organising and taking action alongside movements that advocate for Palestinian liberation and other social justice causes.
TEACHING METHODS/WAYS OF LEARNING
You will be provided with lots of visual material - watching works of various artists, shorter and longer somatic and performance practices, discussions in smaller groups, practicing receiving and giving feedback, outdoor practice, improvisation and working with scores, public space practices, practicing with captive audience and passers-by, working with methods of community facilitating and popular education, reflecting on what it is to set contexts for learning and where and how learning happens.
TIMES, DATES and COMMITMENT
This is a six weeks course 7th January- 11th of February.
It is an intensive workshop on Mondays and Wednesdays 10:15 (ferry from the Market Square at 9:40) to 15:20 (ferry from Suomenlinna at 15:50). During the first day, we will have an orientation to Art School Maa and its customs.

FORM OF STUDIES
Teaching days are at Art School Maa. A full schedule will be provided before the course begins.
Teaching happens mostly in English.
HOW MUCH AND WHAT ARE YOU PAYING FOR
The course fee is 250€.
The course fee consists of teachers’ salaries (22€ per hour + social expenses) and required working hours for coordinating the course. Art School Maa is a non-profit meaning all extra expenses go to the maintenance costs and rents.

In Performance Making - Performanssin teossa
Kurssin fasilitoivat kaksi opettaja-performanssitaiteilijaa: Raphaël Beau ja Dash Che. Ohjaajat vuorottelevat kurssin opetuspäivinä. Kurssi keskittyy kahteen pääkomponenttiin: tutustumiseen taiteellisiin menetelmiin tarkastelemalla erilaisia performanssiteosesimerkkejä ja taiteellisten menetelmien kokeilemiseen erilaisten esityskäytäntöjen kautta.
Kuuden viikon kurssilla perehdymme kaikkeen performanssiin liittyvään teorian ja käytännön kautta. Teoriaosioissa luemme tekstejä, katsomme ja keskustelemme olemassa olevista teoksista ja ajattelemme yhdessä. Työskentelemme yhdessä ja yksin, kehitämme performanssirutiineja, keskustelemme ja testaamme useita esitysmenetelmiä tai performanssin tekoa ohjaavia periaatteita ja tapoja. Lisäksi kehitämme strategioita kriittisen (ja rakastavan) palautteen antamiseen ja vastaanottamiseen henkilökohtaisesta taiteellisesta työstä.
Kurssin käytännön puoli sisältää työskentelyä scorejen eli lyhyiden esityskäsikirjotusten kanssa, somaattisia- ja liikeharjoituksia, kosketuksen ja ympäristömme tekstuurien tutkimista sekä tekstin luomisen kokeilua. Harjoittelemme improvisaatiota performanssin työkaluna, kirjaamme kokemuksiamme muistiin, työskentelemme ulkona ja julkisissa tiloissa ja opettelemme hyväksymään kokeilun ja epäonnistumisen osana prosessia. Sekä yksilöllinen että kollektiivinen reflektio on keskeistä, samoin kuin esiintyjän, tarkkailijan ja fasilitaattorin roolien vaihtuminen. Yhdessä pohdimme työmme resonanssia päivän paikallisissa ja globaaleissa konteksteissa ja käsittelemme tekijyyteen, yhteistyöhön, perintöön ja esitysten tekemisen tulevaisuuteen liittyviä kysymyksiä.
Osallistujilta pyydetään kiinnostusta esiintymiseen, paikkasidonnaiseen esiintymiseen, improvisointiin, ryhmässä ja yksin työskentelyyn sekä uteliaisuutta ja halua ottaa riskejä ja kokeilla uusia asioita: halua tulla nähdyksi, tutkia erilaisia esiintymistapoja, ja esiintyä ulkona ja erityisesti julkisessa tilassa.

OPETUSMENETELMÄT/OPPIMISTAVAT
Käytössämme tulee olemaan paljon visuaalista materiaalia – tutustumme eri taiteilijoiden teoksiin, harjoittelemme lyhyempiä ja pidempiä somaattisia- ja esitystaitoja, keskustelemme pienryhmissä, harjoittelemme palautteen vastaanottamista ja antamista, ulkona työskentelyä, improvisointia ja scorejen kanssa työskentelyä, julkisessa tilassa työskentelyä, yleisön ja ohikulkijoiden kanssa esiintymistä, yhteisöllisyyden fasilitoinnin ja julkisen tilan menetelmiä sekä pohdimme mitä oppimisen kontekstien luominen on ja missä ja miten oppiminen tapahtuu.

Kurssi kestää kuusi viikkoa, 7. tammikuuta – 11. helmikuuta. Se on intensiivinen työpaja, joka järjestetään maanantaisin ja keskiviikkoisin klo 10.15 (lautta Kauppatorilta klo 9.40) – 15.20 (lautta Suomenlinnasta klo 15.50). Kurssin aluksi perehdytään Taidekoulu Maahan ja sen toimintatapoihin.

KUINKA PALJON JA MISTÄ MAKSAT
Kurssimaksu on 250 €. Kurssimaksu koostuu opettajien palkoista (22 €/tunti + sosiaalikulut) ja kurssin koordinointiin tarvittavista työtunneista. Taidekoulu Maa on voittoa tavoittelematon organisaatio, joten kaikki ylimääräiset kulut menevät ylläpitokustannuksiin ja vuokriin.
