Introduction to Installation Art

The course consists of various tasks that take ideas forward towards a finished spatial work: an installation. The works use found materials. The course also consists of lectures on installation art and some theoretical texts.
An installation refers to a work of art that consists of different elements, which together are experienced as one spatial work, as distinct from individual works in space. An installation creates a situation that a person enters and experiences as a single whole that can be experienced physically with different senses. Installation works are usually temporary, built in a specific place. They are not bound to a specific medium or technique. Examples: a sculpture, drawing, sound, light or video installation, or any other event, or a performance in which the viewer plays an active role with other participants.

First day's programme: start of the course with a shared discussion about installation, ideas and making works.
TIMES, DATES and COMMITMENT:
This is a five weeks course 23th February- 25th of March.
It is an intensive workshop on Mondays and Wednesdays 10:15 (ferry from the Market Square at 9:40) to 15:20 (ferry from Suomenlinna at 15:40). During the first day, we will have an orientation to Art School Maa and its customs.

Teaching days are at Art School Maa. A full schedule will be provided before the course begins. Teaching happens mostly in Finnish, but communication in English is also possible.
HOW MUCH AND WHAT ARE YOU PAYING FOR:
The course fee is 300€.
The course fee consists of teachers’ salaries (22€ per hour + social expenses) and required working hours for coordinating the course. Art School Maa is a non-profit meaning all extra expenses go to the maintenance costs and rents.

Kurssi koostuu erilaisista tehtävistä, jotka vievät ideoita eteenpäin kohti valmista tilallista teosta: installaaiota. Teoksissa käytetään löydetävissä olevia materiaaleja. Kurssi koostuu myös installaatiotaiteen luennoista ja muutaman tekstin lukemisesta.
Installaatiolla taiteessa tarkoitetaan teosta, joka koostuu erilaisista elementeistä, jotka yhdessä koetaan yhtenä tilallisena teoksena, erotuksena yksittäisistä teoksista
tilassa. Installaatio luo tilanteen, johon ihminen fyysisesti menee ja kokee sen yhdeksi kokonaisuudeksi, joka on kehollisesti eri aistein koettavissa.
Installaatioteokset ovat yleensä tilapäisiä tiettyyn paikkaan rakennettuja. Ne eivät ole sidottuja tiettyyn välineeseen tai tekniikkaan. Esimerkkeinä: veistos-, piirros, ääni, valo- tai videoinstallaatio, tai muu tapahtuma, tai esitys, jossa katsoja on aktiivisessa roolissa muiden tekijöiden kanssa.

Ensimmäisen päivän ohjelma: kurssin aloitus yhteisellä keskustelulla installaatiosta, ideoista ja teosten valmistamisesta.
AIKATAULU, PÄIVÄMÄÄRÄT JA SITOUTUMINEN:
Kurssi kestää viisi viikkoa, 23. helmikuuta – 25. maaliskuuta.
Se on intensiivinen työpaja, joka järjestetään maanantaisin ja keskiviikkoisin klo 10.15 (lautta Kauppatorilta klo 9.40) – 15.20 (lautta Suomenlinnasta klo 15.40). Kurssin aluksi perehdytään Taidekoulu Maahan ja sen toimintatapoihin.

OPINTOJEN MUOTOO:
Opetuspäivät ovat taidekoulu Maassa. Täydellinen aikataulu toimitetaan ennen kurssin alkua. Opetus tapahtuu pääasiassa suomeksi, mutta englanti on myös mahdollista.
KUINKA PALJON JA MISTÄ MAKSAT:
Kurssimaksu on 300 €.
Kurssimaksu koostuu opettajien palkoista (22 €/tunti + sosiaalikulut) ja kurssin koordinointiin tarvittavista työtunneista. Taidekoulu Maa on voittoa tavoittelematon organisaatio, joten kaikki ylimääräiset kulut menevät ylläpitokustannuksiin ja vuokriin.
